Back in 1992 a 2 ½ acre plot of land, at the foot of the mountains with a
stream flowing through it, was acquired and a hospital building designed.
This plan had to be shelved for various reasons.
The ACCORD office building was modified to serve as the hospital. This is
now proving to be totally inadequate and there is a pressing need for a
better equipped, better designed building.
We have come out with a simple, functional design for the new hospital
building.
The main block will house OP, wards, investigative unit and ICU in 2
levels - a basement and a ground floor. A third upper level will house the
offices. The Labour and Delivery rooms (LR) and the Operating Rooms (OT)
will be in 2 smaller blocks. The total area works out to about 13500 sq.ft.and
circulation space of 2850 sq feet.
The estimated cost of constructing this new hospital building is
Rs. 9,000,000 (about $195,000).
The canteen and staff quarters in an area of about 5200 sq feet. The cost of
this is estimated to be Rs.3,100,000 (about $ 69,000).
We have completed the 1st phase of the hospital building by May 2009. Construction in the 2nd phase has started right after that. Already, construction of the canteen has been finished; work on the staff quarters is in progress. We are looking for support for the following components of the Hospital Building's 2nd phase :
* Operating Room * Labour Room * New Born Wards * More Staff Quarters
It is now easy to donate to ASHWINI for this building construction.

Progress of Work : The entire construction is being done using soil cement blocks. Soil Cement Blocks are an labour intensive, environment-friendly
and low-cost construction technique. Over the years, we have trained quite a
few adivasi youth as masons and experts in this construction technique. (You can see the video of the Soil Cement Block making from this
link.)
The slideshow below shows the progress of the work in 1st phase.

September 2007 : Adivasi youth from Kotharavayal village making the Soil Cement Blocks in the Hospital site. Soil from the site is used for making these blocks
October 2007 : Engineers and Architects who specilise on low cost, environment friendly construction techniques are consulted in the design and construction
November 2007 : Construction of walls of the Ground Floor is under progress. Soil Cement Blocks give a special look to the walls
December 2007 : All the adivasi team members contributed to the building construction by doing manual work for two days on December 24th and 25th
January 2008 : Wall construction of the first floor has been completed
February 2008 : Another view of the building under construction. Soil for making blocks is being prepared
March 2008 : Village health guides contributed their labour on March 16, 2008 in the construction site. Efforts like this show that it is their own hospital
April 2008 : Construction of the second floor has been progressing fast. We hope to construct the roof of the second floor before monsoon
May 2008 : A big retention wall was constructed to protect the building. Compare this with the structure of January 2008
June 2008 : A view of the rooms in the second floor of the new hospital building
July 2008 : Construction in the 2nd floor has reached the lintel level. This is the rear view of the building
August 2008 : Inspite of the monsoon, construction work continues in the hospital site
September 2008 : Toilet complex for both the floors is under construction
October 2008 : New building is taking shape in the picturesque backdrop of the frog hills
November 2008 : Adivasi team members contributed another day of voluntary labour for the hospital construction, moving blocks nearer to the site
December 2008 : Rooms in the new hospital building are taking shape. This is a view of the new Isolation Room for sick patients
January 2009 : Finishing work is in full swing in the hospital building. In the front, the canteen block has come up quite fast
February 2009 : The new Isolation room for patients with infectious diseases is done in the ground floor of the new building
March 2009 : Work on the roof level is getting completed, as the date for inauguration has been fixed as May 3, 2009
April 2009 : Office rooms and Classrooms are being constructed on the top floor.
April 2009 : On 18.4.2009, more volunteers organised another Workcamp. A big group of sangam members from Pattavayal participated.
May 2009 : On 3.5.2009, the 1st phase of the building construction was completed and inaugurated.
We will keep everyone updated on the progress of construction through this
section.
We would like to thank all our supporters, who are helping us realise this
long cherished dream.
