Tea Crop in the Nilgiri Hills

Tea is the major crop in the Nilgiri Hills. Through a sustained programme for about
10 years, many AMS members have planted tea in their land. This not only gives regular
income, but also helps them to protect their land from encroachment. From wage labourers,
adivasis have become landowners and tea cultivators. As a logical next step, they have
organised themselves into an informal Cooperative Society to market the tea leaves collectively.
