A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO GRASSROOTS HEALTHCARE
The elective experience will be an opportunity for you to learn about
providing health care without the infrastructure and diagnostic facilities
available in your own countries. Its a good chance to better your clinical
skills. In addition, there will be opportunities to visit some of the
villages that the community health programme covers.
Teaching will comprise of daily ward rounds, bedside teaching, outpatient
clinics, case presentations and seminars (no boring didactic lectures!), all
in small groups. The hospital covers all specialities, including General
Medicine & Surgery, O & G and Paediatrics. You will see a wide range of
cases, including infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and typhoid (no
malaria here!), bronchopneumonia and malnutrition, as well as hypertension,
diabetes, heart and vascular diseases.
Other things to do : Nearby, there are many well-known tourist places to
visit Mysore, Ooty, Kerala. There are also lots of hiking opportunities
nearby. Getting here : Nearest airports are Bangalore or Cochin (both 6 hours away), or Chennai (then an overnight journey to reach here).
